4th Miami Workshop on Aerosol Science and Technology - Summer School in Winter

The Center for Aerosol Science and Technology (CAST) at the University of Miami is hosting its 4th Annual Workshop on Aerosol Science and Technology on January 15 to 16, 2026. The purpose of this two-day workshop is to learn fundamentals of aerosol science and nanoparticle technology, and promote academic and industrial collaborative opportunities. Tutorial session and invited keynote speakers will lead the technical sessions on:

  • Malvern Panalytical Special Session on Advanced Materials Characterizations
  • Nanoparticle Technology: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications
  • Emerging Aerosols in Coastal Environments
  • Indoor Air Quality and Public Health
  • Particle Instrument Hands-on Demonstration
  • Invited speakers include:
    • Jon Samet, Colorado School of Public Health
    • Erin Kobetz, University of Miami
    • Andrew Ault, University of Michigan
    • Lauren Zamora, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Tutorials on topics related to Aerosol Science and Technology:
    • Portable and Wearable Sensors: Design and Applications (Pratim Biswas)
    • Microplastics and PFAS: sources, characterizations, and toxicity (Virender Sharma)
    • Modeling the climate impact of atmospheric aerosols (Siyuan Wang)
    • Advanced characterization of nanoparticles

The technical sessions will be accompanied by poster sessions, exhibits, and lab tours. The Workshop is specifically advantageous to beginning researchers (graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty) and participants from Industry.

CAST is a newly established research center at the University of Miami that has ten core and multiple affiliated faculty members from the College of Engineering, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and Miller School of Medicine. CAST focuses on the characterization of fundamental aerosol formation and transformation processes to determine impacts on the environment, climate, and human health and to utilize these processes to develop new materials to enable energy, environmental and medical technologies.

Date:
January 15 to January 16, 2026

Location:
Coral Gables Campus, University of Miami

Format:

  • Each technical session will be led by two 30-minute invited keynote presentations, followed by two to three 15-minute technical presentations and a 60-min panel discussion
  • Poster sessions are scheduled on the second day of the workshop
  • Breakfasts, lunches, and coffee breaks included

Travel Funds:

The 2026 CAST Workshop is generously supported by the National Science Foundation (Award 2447193). A one-time travel fund of $550 per student attendee is available to selected student attendees. The application form can be accessed below.
